[§344] The Telestial Resurrection of the Unjust
The first resurrection will end when the last of all celestial and terrestrial-worthy people are resurrected at the end of the millennium.1 When the first resurrection ends, the only mortal people left on earth will be telestial-worthy people and sons of perdition. These alone will remain on earth to fight as mortals in the battle of the great God (Gog and Magog) during the little season.2 In the course of this battle, the remaining mortals must choose to fight on one side of the battle or the other.3 They will be influenced in their decision by Satan and his hellish host of evil unembodied spirits on the one hand and by Michael and his heavenly host on the other hand.4 The choice that people make in this final battle on earth will determine5 who among them will be resurrected to the telestial kingdom6 in the morning of the last resurrection7 and who among them will be resurrected last8 to outer darkness9 as sons of perdition10 in the afternoon of the last resurrection.11 These two divisions make up the second resurrection,12 which is also called the resurrection of the unjust.13
The resurrection of the unjust will begin and end for all telestial people as a group immediately before the little season ends.14 This telestial resurrection is for the wicked people alive on earth at the end of the little season, as well as all other telestial-worthy people that have lived in any age of the earth who are also under condemnation.15 Those resurrected to telestial glory include liars, sorcerers, adulterers, murderers, etc.16 They live telestial law according to worldly standards.17 They refuse to repent until they‒by their suffering and torment in mortality or the postmortal spirit world‒finally acknowledge and accept Christ before their resurrection.18 They will then inherit a kingdom of glory, but are still condemned because they do not qualify for either celestial or terrestrial glory in the resurrection of the just at the end of the millennium.19
An innumerable host of people will be resurrected to the telestial kingdom.20 Their number and the variations of their glory will differ even as one star differs from another star in glory.21 The glory of the telestial kingdom is incomparable to the sun-like glory of the celestial kingdom22 or the moon-like glory of the terrestrial kingdom.23 Nevertheless, the glory of the telestial kingdom will surpass all mortal understanding.24 Even the least worthy people in this kingdom will receive glory and blessings that surpass human understanding, including the full presence and influence of the Holy Ghost through ministrations of the terrestrial kingdom.25
The telestial resurrection will begin when a third symbolic trump sounds in heaven as described in Doctrine and Covenants Section 88:100-101. Those resurrected to the telestial kingdom in these verses are found under condemnation and they live not again until the end of the earth.26 This third trump corresponds in time with the end of the little season when the mortal armies of Gog and Magog have surrounded the camp of telestial saints at Old Jerusalem, as recorded in Revelation 20:8-9.27 This will be the end of the earth28 when the Lord will preserve the entire group of telestial saints then living by resurrecting them to immortality with telestial bodies29 in the twinkling of an eye.30
Before these living people can be resurrected to telestial glory in the twinkling of an eye at the end of the little season, they must first suffer the wrath of God in the flesh on earth.31 They must also bow the knee and confess that Jesus is the Christ,32 which they will feel constrained to do by the things they suffer.33 The wrath of God is an exercise of God's divine justice,34 which is frequently inflicted upon the wicked through wars,35 plagues and natural disasters.36 During the little season, God's wrath will be inflicted by desolations that will accompany the battle of the great God.37 The telestial people that suffer this wrath of God on earth will repent during the little season. They will be cleansed from, and forgiven of, their sins.38 They will be redeemed at the end of the earth and enter the telestial kingdom.39 Since they do so in the twinkling of an eye, their spirits will not enter prison in the postmortal spirit world.40
Relatively few telestial-worthy people will be alive at the end of the earth to resurrect to telestial glory in the twinkling of an eye. Most telestial people, by far, will die unrepentant throughout the 6,000-year history of the telestial earth from the fall of Adam until the millennium.41 When these many telestial people die unrepentant, their disembodied spirits go to hell42 in the postmortal spirit prison43 to suffer the wrath of God in that setting.44 Spirits in prison suffer God's wrath, which is called the vengeance of eternal fire in Doctrine and Covenants Section 76:105. This torment has the same cleansing effect in spirit prison45 as the earthly afflictions that will cleanse telestial people on earth during the little season.46 Regardless of the length of their cleansing process in hell, the disembodied spirits of telestial-worthy people from all ages of the earth must await their resurrection until the end of the little season.47 This is also the end of the earth.48 Christ's work will then be finished among the telestial-worthy saints,49 and his enemies who are sons of perdition will be subdued beneath his feet.50
Once the Lord has preserved all telestial saints, both living and dead, in a resurrected state, then the plagues, pestilences, and fire from heaven will immediately destroy and devour the remaining mortal sons of perdition (Gog and Magog), as recorded in Ezekiel 38.51 In Revelation 20:9, John mentions only that fire that will devour the mortal sons of perdition.52 In this fire, the earth and everything on it will die,53 and then the earth shall not any more see death.54
