[§325] Life and Death During the Millennium

Life and death as they exist in this fallen telestial world1 will not exist during the millennium.2 When the Savior comes in glory at the Second Coming,3 all corruptible things will be consumed.4 The earth will be restored to paradisiacal glory,5 but there is no reason to think this will happen in an instant. Over some period of time the earth shall heal itself and it will be transfigured6 to a terrestrial state.7 People that remain on the millennial earth8 as mortals9 will also be transfigured or translated10 so they can endure Christ's glory at his Second Coming and beyond.11 Elder Bruce R. McConkie calls their condition "millennial mortality."12 Millennial mortals will continue to engage in everyday activities,13 including the earth's rebuilding activities, but they will do so in the peaceful setting of a millennial paradise.14

John provides no details about life during the millennium.15 However, Isaiah,16 Joseph Smith,17 and other notable prophets have done so.18 The prophets teach that enmity will cease between animals amongst themselves, and also between animals and humans.19 Isaiah poetically described how animals will not prey on each other, saying, the lion shall eat straw like the bullock in Isaiah 65:25.20 The earth shall also become as a holy mountain (temple),21 and there shall be no wars.22 People will build houses and prosper by the work of their own hands.23 The earth will produce food in abundance.24 Water will be plentiful,25 although some scholars interpret the scriptural references to the abundance of millennial water as a symbol of spiritual living water.26

Mortal and immortal people will co-exist on earth during the millennium.27 Relatively few mortals will be alive when the millennium begins because so many people will die when the earth is physically cleansed at the Second Coming.28 The millennial mortals who survive, however, will no longer be subject to physical sickness,29 and they will live to the age of 100 years.30 What happens to them at age 100 depends on how they live during the millennium.

Many children of the millennium will grow up without sin unto salvation, which means they will have an inheritance in the celestial kingdom.31 When celestial-worthy people reach the age of 100 years,32 they will be changed in the twinkling of an eye to celestial glory33 without any separation of their inward spirit from their physical body.34 Their physical body will not go to the grave to await a future resurrection because the celestial resurrection will be ongoing until the millennium ends.35

People that live only terrestrial law during the millennium,36 on the other hand, will die when they reach 100 years of age37 and their bodies will lie in the grave.38 Isaiah calls them sinners and states that they are accursed.39 This means they are damned in their eternal progress because they are not worthy of exaltation or even resurrection to the celestial kingdom.40 Furthermore, since the terrestrial resurrection will not occur until the end of the millennium,41 their dead physical bodies must lie in the grave apart from their disembodied spirit until that time.42
