[§343] The Post-Millennial Battle of the Great God in Ezekiel 38

Ezekiel 38 describes the post-millennial battle of Gog and Magog during the little season,1 which is called the battle of the great God in Doctrine and Covenants Section 88:114.2 John's vision of this future battle in Revelation 20:7-9 is very short, but the visions and foreshadows in Ezekiel 38 provide many details.3

For example, in Ezekiel 16 and 38:14, the Lord identifies the people living in the millennium as my people of Israel.4 John identifies these same Israelites as saints in Revelation 20:9.5 However, after the terrestrial resurrection at the end of the millennium, the only Israelite-saints left on the earth will be telestial-worthy people and sons of perdition.6 Those that repent and accept Christ and his law7 are the good fruit that the Lord will preserve8 during the telestial resurrection at the end of the little season.9 To preserve this remnant of Israel, the Lord will allow Gog and Magog to come against them during the little season.10 Gog and Magog will scatter and smite the remnant11 as ancient Israel was scattered, smitten, and punished12 so they might remember and turn to the Lord their God.

The little season will begin in earnest when Satan is loosed from the bottomless pit in Revelation 20:7.13 Spiritual darkness will then blanket the earth,14 much like the spiritual darkness of the First Woe before the battle of Armageddon in Revelation 9:1-12.15 In this time of great darkness at the end of the millennium, many people will become mortal sons of perdition as they openly rebel against Christ and his millennial kingdom.16 Ezekiel 38:9 states that wicked and rebellious people will enlist in the armies of Gog and Magog in large numbers to become "like a storm... [and] a cloud to cover the land, thou, and all thy bands, and many people with thee."17 These future participants in the armies of Gog and Magog are foreshadowed by the Gadiantion Robbers in the Book of Mormon18 and by all other secret and oath bound societies that first began with Cain in the days of Adam.19 These secret combinations have continued throughout history20 and they still exist on earth today.21 History will repeat itself again when the secret combinations of Gog and Magog bring about the entire destruction of humanity at the end of the little season.22

The universal peace found in the unwalled villages of the millennium23 will cease when the armies of Gog and Magog arise with an evil thought (intent)24 in Ezekiel 38:12 "to take a spoil, and to take a prey against the people that are gathered out of the nations, which have gotten cattle and goods."25 The Israelites of the millennium will have many cattle and goods because they will dwell in the midst of the land, where the city of Old Jerusalem is the metaphorical life-giving naval according to Ezekiel 5:5.26 The whole millennial earth will be a productive paradise like the Garden of Eden.27 Such prosperity, however, will eventually lead to pride28 and materialism29 that will cause the millennial society of Zion30 to utterly collapse by the start of the little season.31 The people then living will forsake the celestial law of consecration32 and class distinctions will emerge as they did among the Nephites.33 At some point, the armies of Gog and Magog will control the millennial government34 as the Gadianton Robbers corrupted and controlled the government among the Nephites.35

According to Ezekiel 38, the battle of the great God after the millennium will end much like the battle of Armageddon before the millennium.36 For example, there will be a great earthquake at the end of both battles.37 In both battles, the wicked armies fall upon each other with their own swords.38 In the battle of the great God during the little season there will be an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone as recorded in Ezekiel 18:22.39 This description is similar to the seven last plagues of the Third Woe before the Second Coming.40 Finally, fire from heaven will completely devour the remnant of Gog's army,41 comparable to the literal fire that will burn the wicked at the time of Christ's Second Coming.42 In this final series of plagues at the end of the earth, Ezekiel speaks for the Lord in Ezekiel 38:23, saying: "I will magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the LORD."43
