[§340] Rev 20:8: Satan Gathers Gog and Magog for a Final Battle

Revelation 20:8: And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.

Satan and his unembodied spirit sons of perdition will be loosed from prison after the 1000-year millennium1 to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth.2 This means essentially the four corners of all people.3 Satan's deceit (seduction)4 will spread gross wickedness5 and rebellion6 throughout the earth7 among all telestial people and sons of perdition that remain on earth during the little season.8 Their gross wickedness will be similar to the wicked and rebellious Nephites9 after their 200-year mini-millennium.10 The once-enlightened Nephites became so incredibly wicked and rebellious11 that their civilization was hewn down and entirely destroyed.12

Gog and Magog are the symbolic names given by John for the warring people and nations during the little season.13 They symbolize the rebellious mortal sons of perdition14 that will consciously give themselves wholly to Satan's power and control.15 The same names appear in Rabbinical writings16 and in other ancient literature.17 The Gog of Magog in John's vision18 alludes to an unknown, but wicked leader of nations from antiquity.19 In other words, John's post-millennial vision of the little season20 uses the names of Gog and Magog from the past21 as symbols or types22 of wicked peoples and nations during the little season.23

Ezekiel 38:8 prophesied that the little season would occur "after many days ... in the latter years."24 In this future time, Satan will use his powerful influence over the mortal sons of perdition (i.e., Gog and Magog)25 to gather them together to battle against the saints identified in Revelation 20:9.26 In this context, the saints are mortal people that will eventually qualify for telestial glory after they suffer God's wrath inflicted on them by the armies of Gog and Magog.27 They become saints worthy of the telestial kingdom28 if they confess Christ29 and truly repent.30 There will be no celestial saints or terrestrial saints alive during the little season because the resurrections of such people will be complete by the end of the millennium and before the little season begins.31

The battle of Gog and Magog will be the ultimate and final battle32 between good (telestial people) and evil (sons of perdition).33 This is the final chapter or battle in the war34 that first began during the premortal existence in heaven.35 The number of mortal participants in this final battle will be as the proverbial sand of the sea.36 Satan and his unembodied sons of perdition will use deception to incite these mortal armies37 to wage a bloody and violent war38 in which every man's sword shall be against his brother.39 This final scene is foreshadowed by the genocidal battles that destroyed the Jaredite40 and Nephite civilizations from the Book of Mormon.41 The little season of unparalleled wickedness42 will likewise end when all people on earth are dead.43
