[§145] Zion Built in the Last 3½ Years of Armageddon

Daniel's Seventy Weeks Prophecy indicates that the battle of Armageddon will rage during the last week of seven years before the Second Coming.1 During the first half of Armageddon (3½ years), the wicked will slay the wicked as Satan's power on earth reaches a climax.2 At the midpoint of Armageddon, righteous saints will gather to Adam-ondi-Ahman.3 At that time, Modern Babylon will spiritually fall and Christ will take dominion on earth with his saints.4 The land of Zion will then be redeemed and the construction of New Jerusalem (Zion) and her temple will begin.5 Latter-day Saints will gather to the lands of Zion in Missouri6 where they will stand in holy places7 and be preserved during the last 3½ years of Armageddon, which is also called the Great Tribulation.8 The Jews will be preserved in the city of Old Jerusalem during the same 3½ year period through the ministry of the Two Witnesses identified in Revelation chapter 11.9

During the last 3½ years of Armageddon, the saints in Zion will be the only people not at war amongst themselves.10 The Lord will fight the battles of Zion against her adversaries.11 The land will be invulnerable to attack from without12 because the glory of the Lord will be present in Zion.13 The land of Zion will be a defense and refuge for the saints14 if they remain worthy.15 Those that cannot or will not flee unto Zion at the time appointed by the Lord must take up the sword to defend themselves during the 3½ years of the Great Tribulation.16 The peaceful and protected conditions of Zion will make it feasible for the citizens of Zion to begin construction of the New Jerusalem17 at Independence, Missouri18 during the Great Tribulation.19

The temple of Zion at New Jerusalem will be built by the seed of Jacob20 (Israel)21 under the leadership of Ephraim.22 This is foreshadowed by events in ancient history when the children of Israel were led by Moses to the promised land to build Zion.23 Several identifiable groups will help construct the temple, including a remnant of the Lamanites24 and converted Gentiles.25 The Lost Ten Tribes will also assist in this endeavor before they receive their temple ordinances in this same temple after the Second Coming.26 The Lord will inspire the manner of the temple's construction,27 and the work will proceed at the direction of the prophet and president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.28 The plans for the temple and city will be based on designs the Lord has revealed or will yet reveal.29

The magnificent temple complex in New Jerusalem30 will be built in stages31 on forty-five acres of land.32 This temple and other sacred buildings33 will be built in the everlasting hills of Jackson County Missouri.34 The materials of this temple will endure throughout the millennium without any decay or deterioration.35 The world will oppose construction of this temple,36 just as the Samaritans opposed the Jewish construction of the Second Temple of Zerubbabel in Jerusalem after the Jews returned from Babylon.37 Since construction of the temple in New Jerusalem will occur during the battle of Armageddon, the temple craftsmen will work with tools in one hand while figuratively holding weapons in the other.38 Despite the threats of Armageddon and other ungodly conditions beyond the righteous borders of Zion,39 no unhallowed hand shall stay the progress of the Lord's work in Zion40 and her citizens shall become a mighty people in the Lord.41

After 3½ years of construction during the Great Tribulation, the temple at New Jerusalem (or some portion of it) will be dedicated.42 At the dedication, the Lord will come to this temple suddenly43 as he came to the temple in Kirtland, Ohio in 1836.44 This will be the Lord's first formal or public appearance of the Second Coming.45 When Christ appears, the sons of Moses and Aaron46 will stand in the Lord's presence and offer again an offering unto the Lord in righteousness.47 The city of Enoch will descend from heaven above to unite with New Jerusalem from beneath.48 By this time, all nations on earth shall be constrained to acknowledge that the people and land of Zion are the kingdom of Jesus Christ.49

After the Second Coming,50 the city of New Jerusalem will become the political capital of the world51 and Old Jerusalem will become the religious capital of the world.52 Some members of the church believe that an LDS temple will be built in Old Jerusalem before the Second Coming.53 Truly, a temple will be built again in Old Jerusalem before the Second Coming as many think, but it will be built by unconverted Jews.54 They are already gathered to Old Jerusalem in a state of unbelief55 and they will build a Third Temple to replace the First Temple of Solomon and the Second Temple of Herod.56 The Third Temple will be constructed no later than the first half of Armageddon because John symbolically measures this temple at the midpoint of the battle in Revelation 11:1.57 The Third Temple will then be destroyed with half the city of Old Jerusalem during the final Abomination of Desolation58 that will occur during the last 3½ days before Christ's Second Coming to the mount of Olives.59 After the Second Coming, Old Jerusalem will be rebuilt60 and the converted Jews will then build a Fourth Temple with full priesthood authority.61 A great council of God in Old Jerusalem will then be held and there will be a uniting of the two divisions of God's government headquartered in both New and Old Jerusalem.62
