[§131] Daniel’s Vision of the Future Gathering at Adam-ondi-Ahman

The ancient gathering of Adam's righteous posterity at Adam-ondi-Ahman foreshadows the future gathering of saints to be held at the same location, in Daviess County, Missouri.1 Doctrine and Covenants Section 116 states that Adam-ondi-Ahman is so named today because the future gathering of saints "is the place where Adam shall come to visit his people, or the Ancient of Days shall sit, as spoken of by Daniel the prophet."2 Daniel's vision of Adam-ondi-Ahman is recorded in Daniel chapter 7.3 His vision adds significant detail to John's vision of Adam-ondi-Ahman in Revelation chapter 10.4 Indeed, many images and symbols from the Book of Daniel are incorporated into John's apocalyptic visions in the Book of Revelation.5

Daniel had an epic vision of the latter-day gathering at Adam-ondi-Ahman6 when he was about 68 years old–roughly 14 years before he was cast into the lion's den.7 His vision in Daniel chapter 7 builds on the dream of King Nebuchadnezzar from ancient Babylon, which is found in Daniel chapter 2.8 Nebuchadnezzar's dream depicted a series of political kingdoms from the time of Babylon through the end of the world.9 The latter-day kingdoms of the world were depicted by ten toes of clay and iron.10 These modern kingdoms will be destroyed in a future day by the stone11 or kingdom of God12 that is cut out of the mountain without hands.13 Daniel chapter 7 compliments these images from the dream of Nebuchadnezzar, but Daniel uses an entirely different set of images. Instead of an image made of gold, silver, bronze, iron, and clay to describe political kingdoms from Babylon to the Second Coming, Daniel used the images of beasts to describe the moral and spiritual condition14 of earthly kingdoms from Babylon to the Second Coming.15 These kingdoms are a degenerate and worldly part of Satan's kingdom on earth,16 and for this reason his dominion in each kingdom is cast in the image of a beast.17

In Nebuchadnezzar's dream from Daniel chapter 2, each political kingdom after Babylon was conquered and destroyed18 and each subsequent kingdom was inferior to the one before.19 In Daniel chapter 7, by contrast, Satan's dominion in each political kingdom survived20 and Satan's power actually grew stronger in each succeeding kingdom than in the one before.21 Thus, Satan's power on earth will continue to grow in the modern era22 until his power peaks at the midpoint of Armageddon during the Second Woe.23 When the saints gather to Adam-ondi-Ahman at the midpoint of Physical Armageddon during the Second Woe,24 Satan's power and dominion in the world will reach its maximum extent and then it will begin to diminish as Jesus Christ begins to retake dominion on earth.25

There have been many worldly kingdoms since Babylon,26 and they are all part of the kingdom of the devil.27 Wicked governments and worldly institutions are variously known as the church of the devil,28 the great and abominable church,29 the whore of all the earth30 and secret combinations.31 These are the dominions of Satan that will increasingly grow in power on earth until the latter-day gathering of righteous saints at Adam-ondi-Ahman just 3½ years before the Second Coming.32 At Adam-ondi-Ahman, Christ will be coronated King of kings33 and he will immediately begin to retake dominion on earth34 with his righteous saints.35 Satan's power and dominion will correspondingly decrease on earth until it is entirely subdued by Christ's victory over Satan at the Second Coming.36
