[§308] Rev 19:7-8: Marriage of the Lamb and His Wife [the Church]
Revelation 19:7: Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
Let us be glad and rejoice1 are the words loudly spoken by the great multitude of 144,000 Servants2 in Revelation 19:6.3 The 144,000 Servants rejoice because the joyful4 marriage of the Lamb occurs as Babylon is destroyed during the seventh Vial Plague of the Third Woe.5 The 144,000 Servants represent all exaltation-worthy members of Christ's true church from all ages.6 Faithful saints with the seal of the living God from any age are the metaphorical bride of Christ.7 They rejoice for the marriage of the Lamb because it is also their wedding day as his bride.
The marriage of the Lamb is a common metaphor8 in scripture,9 including the Old Testament where disobedient Israelites are called an unfaithful wife.10 John's vision of the Lamb's marriage combines several doctrinal themes.11 First and foremost, the marriage of the Lamb symbolizes the consummation12 and fulfillment of Christ's covenants with the faithful members of his church from all ages.13 This consummation occurs at the Second Coming.14 The metaphorical marriage also represents the complete merger of Christ's political kingdom15 with his ecclesiastical kingdom,16 which is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.17 When these two kingdoms fully merge during the marriage of the Lamb, the Church of the Firstborn will emerge in its fulness.18 Membership in the Church of the Firstborn is limited to exaltation-worthy saints numbered among the 144,000 Servants.19
The Church of the Firstborn will emerge from the marriage of the Lamb after Christ destroys Modern Babylon at the Second Coming with great power.20 In Revelation chapter 17, Modern Babylon is identified as an ecclesiastical kingdom represented by the Great Whore21 and a political kingdom22 represented by the ten kings.23 The Great Whore is unchaste and unwed.24 She is the mirror opposite image25 of the chaste and virtuous bride that becomes the wife of Christ.26
In Revelation 19:7, the combined voices from the 144,000 Servants invite all God-fearing people in heaven to give honour to God the Father as directed by the voice of Christ in Revelation 19:5.27 The Father is honored on the marriage day of his Son in fulfillment of the familiar parable of the marriage feast in Matthew 22.28 In the parable, the Father makes a royal wedding feast for his son, Jesus Christ29 at the set time of the Second Coming.30 This is when the marriage of the Lamb is come.31 The Father is honored at the marriage celebration as he gives to Christ (the Lamb)32 all the faithful saints that become the bride of Christ.33 Today, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are commanded to make themselves ready to become the bride of Christ,34 and to be numbered among the 144,000 Servants that the Father gives to Christ‒the bridegroom.35
The marriage of the Lamb will occur on mount Zion in heaven,36 where the 144,000 Servants first stand with Christ to become his bride as recorded in Revelation 14:1-5.37 The 144,000 Servants include the resurrected saints from the city of Enoch38 and all exaltation-worthy saints resurrected in the morning of the first resurrection.39 Translated (quickened)40 people will also be caught up to stand with the Lamb on mount Zion to become his bride during the Third Woe.41 Translated people will continue to live as millennial mortals after the Second Coming and their marriage to the Lamb, but their calling and election to exaltation will be made sure at the time of their metaphorical marriage on mount Zion.42
After the marriage of the Lamb in heaven, Christ will descend in glory with his bride43 at the Second Coming.44 His bride is a great multitude of saints who are sometimes called the New Jerusalem, or Holy Jerusalem,45 heavenly Zion,46 or simply Zion.47 These names apply to the bride of Christ because the citizens of Zion will descend from heaven with Christ as his marriage partner.48 Those from the heavenly city will populate the earthly city of Zion in Missouri at and after the Second Coming.49
After exalted members of the Church of the Firstborn descend from mount Zion as the bride of Christ,50 they will rule and reign with him on earth throughout the millennium51 as a wife rules and reigns with her husband.52
Revelation 19:8: And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints.
All people that qualify for exaltation at the Second Coming will be granted (given)53 the privilege to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white.54 The grace of God enables the bride to wear the wedding garment55 after all she can do to prepare for her marriage to the Lamb.56 Her wedding garment is made clean and white through the power of Christ's atonement.57 The white wedding garment made of fine linen symbolizes the bride's moral purity.58 Her attire is exactly opposite the Great Whore,59 who wears jewels and expensive clothes that are worldly in the extreme.60
John explained that the fine linen given to Christ's bride is the righteousness of saints.61 This righteousness consists of lifelong acts by each individual.62 In a very real sense, the wedding garment is a robe of righteousness that all men and women must make for themselves.63 Each person must be personally worthy to be a bride of Christ.64 The collective goodness of the church is not sufficient to make individual members the bride of Christ.65 The parable of the ten virgins teaches that many members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will not qualify themselves to be a bride of Christ even though they have membership in the church.66 Thus, every member of the church must put on the beautiful garments of a bride in this life.67 They do so as they worthily establish, and become numbered among the covenant citizens of Zion on earth.68
