[§306] Rev 19:4: The 24 Elders and Four Beasts Worship Jesus Christ
Revelation 19:4: And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia.
Revelation 19:1-3 describes a great multitude of redeemed people in heaven as of the Second Coming who unite in one great voice to praise Christ for his victory over Modern Babylon.1 This great multitude will include the four and twenty elders (24 Elders) first identified in Revelation chapter 4, who represent the exaltation-worthy saints that lived and died in John's time during the fifth seal.2 They become part of the great multitude of exaltation-worthy saints in John's second vision of celestial paradise in Revelation 7:7-9,3 and they are numbered among the 144,000 Servants that stand with Christ on mount Zion in Revelation 14:1-3.4
The four beasts first identified in Revelation chapter 4 represent all classes of creation in heaven.5 They also praise and worship Christ as a symbol that all of creation in heaven worships Christ.
Revelation 19:4 is the seventh and last time that John records worship by the 24 Elders and four beasts.6 Their first and second acts of worship occurred in Revelation 4:8-10, where the four beasts and 24 Elders separately worshiped God the Father, who was seated on the throne in paradise at the time of John's vision in 96 AD.7 In Revelation 5:8, they collectively worshiped the Father a third time in the same setting.8 In Revelation 5:14, the 24 Elders separately worshiped the Father again for the fourth time in the same setting.9 In Revelation 7:11-14, the four beasts and 24 Elders collectively worshiped the Father a fifth time at the close of the sixth seal.10 At that time, they were part of the much larger multitude of angels that also silently worshipped in heaven when the seventh seal opened in Revelation 8:1, but John does not describe their worship specifically.11 In Revelation 11:16, the 24 Elders separately worshiped the Father for the sixth time at the end of the Second Woe.12 Finally, in Revelation 19:4, the 24 Elders and four beasts collectively worship a seventh time in reverse order13 during the seventh Vial Plague of the Third Woe.14 This final act of worship occurs as Modern Babylon is physically destroyed15 and Christ begins his earthly reign on earth as King of kings and Lord of lords.16
The seventh act of worship is unique because it occurs after Christ begins his earthly reign as King and Lord of the whole earth.17 Therefore, the 24 Elders and four beasts worship Christ for the first time as the God that sat [sitteth]18 on the throne in Revelation 19:4.19 They fall down and prostrate themselves before Christ as they did before the Father on prior occasions.20 Here, their worship celebrates Christ's complete triumph over Modern Babylon.21 They conclude their last recorded worship of Christ with great finality, saying: Amen; Alleluia.22 These final words of praise mean that Christ is the God of Amen.23
