[§318] Rev 19:17-18: Scavengers Eat the Supper of the Great God

Revelation 19:17: And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;

In Revelation 19:17, John saw an angel standing in the sun.1 This image coincides in time with Christ smiting the nations in the physical battle of Armageddon at Jerusalem in Revelation 19:11-16.2 The angel is Jesus Christ3 and the image represents his second appearance of the Second Coming when he descends and sets his foot upon the mount of Olives in Jerusalem.4 His glory will be so great that he can stand in the sun and still be seen above its brightness.5

At this point, Christ speaks with a loud voice6 to the flesh-eating fowls that fly in the midst of heaven,7 saying: Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God.8 This banquet is called the supper of the great God because Jesus Christ is the great God who sets the table for this feast with dead carcasses9 that will litter the earth at the end of Physical Armageddon.10 The unburied carcasses of the wicked-dead signifies their cursed condition.11 This is a fitting end for the wicked Gentiles at Jerusalem since they will kill the Two Witnesses in the same city and leave their bodies unburied as the Second Woe comes to an end.12

The morbid imagery from the supper of the great God comes from Ezekiel 39:17.13 That scripture and other modern scriptures indicate that the supper of the great God is a banquet for flesh-eating beasts as well as the fowls in heaven.14 This feast of scavengers upon the bodies of the wicked-dead is opposite the feast that will accompany the marriage supper of the Lamb in Revelation 19:9.15 During the marriage supper, the saints will symbolically feast on the living body of the Lamb as they partake of the sacrament.16

Revelation 19:18: That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

During the supper of the great God, scavengers will literally eat17 the flesh from six categories of dead bodies,18 all connected by the conjunctive word and.19 The six categories of wicked flesh from Armageddon include: (1) The flesh of kings, meaning those that worship the Second Beast and fornicate with the Great Whore,20 (2) the flesh of captains, meaning those that command the armies of wicked people,21 (3) the flesh of mighty men, meaning those who are strong opponents of Christ,22 (4) the flesh of horses, denoting a calvary of wicked people,23 (5) the flesh of those that sit as warriors on the horses,24 and (6) the flesh of all men, including multitudes of wicked people that fight against the Lamb.25 John also uses the world number four26 to designate the universal destruction of wicked people in the sixth category by describing them as both free and bond, both small and great.27

The word flesh is used six times in this verse,28 which is one symbolic number short of the perfect number seven.29 The number six symbolically identifies the entire spectrum of wicked people that will die at Jerusalem and then worldwide30 because they fight against the Lamb.31

The supper of the great God is a gruesome but natural part of the earth's physical cleansing process.32 This physical cleansing must occur after all telestial-worthy people are destroyed at Christ's Second Coming.33 The massive number of dead and decaying bodies34 must be disposed of by scavengers or by other means35 as the earth returns to its paradisaical (terrestrial) condition for the millennium.36 Death and decay will cease to exist during the millennium.37 These verses strongly suggest that the transition from the corruptible conditions of the telestial earth will not be immediate and the complete renewal of the paradisiacal conditions of Eden will take a significant period of time‒measured in months or perhaps even years.
