[§242] Rev 14:9-11: The Third Angel Proclaims the Wrath of God

Revelation 14:9: And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand.

After the second angel proclaimed the spiritual and physical fall of Babylon with a normal tone of voice in Revelation 14:8,1 the third angel followed ... with a loud voice.2 This third angel speaks directly to wicked people who fail to come out of Babylon,3 before Babylon falls physically at the Second Coming.4 This specifically includes wicked people in the last days described in Revelation 13:12, who worship the beast and his image.5 These wicked people receive the mark of the Second Beast in their forehead through their complete devotion to him and in their hand through their wicked actions.6

Those who receive this symbolic mark in his forehead or his hand will become sons of perdition or inherit the telestial kingdom, respectively.7 Both groups will be completely destroyed no later than the Second Coming.8 They will become disembodied spirits of the unjust in the postmortal spirit world who must await their resurrection until after the millennium.9 All mortal sons of perdition will die by the end of the Second Woe and all telestial-worthy people will die soon thereafter during the Third Woe at the time of the Second Coming.10

Revelation 14:10: The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb

Worshipers of the Second Beast are spiritual fornicators who increasingly intoxicate themselves on the wine of their fornication, as described by John in Revelation 14:8.11 Those that do so shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God.12 This means that the metaphorical cup filled with God's wrath13 will be poured out without mixture and without dilution14 upon the wicked. When this occurs, the cup of God's wrath will not be diluted with grace and no mercy will be added to the mixture.15 The Lord's unmitigated wrath will be poured out like a deadly poison into the cup of every wicked person who worships the Second Beast.16 Each worshiper of the Second Beast will have a symbolic cup that God fills with his righteous judgments.17 It is called the cup of his indignation because God's indignation (i.e., vengeance and anger)18 fills the cup of each wicked person until they drink God's wrath in full measure.19

Wicked people who drink the cup of his indignation shall be tormented with fire and brimstone.20 This imagery alludes to the physical destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.21 The sins in these ancient cities will rival the latter-day wickedness of Modern Babylon.22 The burning at the Second Coming is literal.23

Modern Babylon will be destroyed in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb.24 The Lamb will be present because he is the eternal judge25 and he will come to tread wicked people like grapes in a winepress.26 The holy angels are the 144,000 Servants that will stand with the Lamb on mount Zion at the Second Coming.27 They are more than just casual observers for they will descend with the Lamb at the Second Coming as an army from heaven to fight in the spiritual battle of Armageddon in Revelation chapter 16.28

Revelation 14:11: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

The smoke of their torment alludes to the smoke from the destroyed cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.29 The destruction of these cities foreshadows30 the destruction of Modern Babylon at the Second Coming.31 The smoke of Modern Babylon will ascend up forever to signify that it will never be rebuilt.32 The smoke will also be an enduring testimony of her wickedness.33

In Revelation 14:10, the wicked are tormented with fire and brimstone to symbolize the manner of their destruction and punishment.34 Revelation 14:11 symbolizes the enduring nature of their exquisite punishment35 by the smoke of their torment [that] ascendeth up for ever and ever‒or for ages of ages.36 Collectively, these verses warn the worshipers of the Second Beast that they will share the desolations of Modern Babylon37 forever and ever if they fail to come out of her.38 The people that remain in Modern Babylon can never come where God and Christ are.39

When the Lord physically destroys worshipers of the Second Beast, their disembodied spirits will enter prison in the postmortal spirit world.40 In that environment they continuously suffer and have no rest day nor night.41 Spirits in celestial paradise, by contrast, are at rest and continuously worship God both day and night.42 Wicked disembodied spirits in prison suffer the same torment regardless of whether they are sons of perdition or future heirs of the telestial kingdom.43 For both groups, the smoke of their torment is said to be endless and ascendeth up forever and ever because this is the type of punishment inflicted by a God who is endless and lives forever and ever.44

Sons of perdition who worship the beast and his image, and ... receiveth the mark of his name will literally suffer endless torment forever and ever45 because they receive no forgiveness in this life nor in the world to come.46 They will be resurrected47 to a state of eternal damnation48 where their torment and suffering will continue forever in outer darkness.49

Telestial-worthy people50 who worship the Second Beast,51 on the other hand, suffer endlessly in the spirit world, but their torment will ultimately cease when they are resurrected52 after the millennium at the end of the earth.53 Their endless torment in the spirit world (hell) is a temporary condition.54 Nevertheless, their resurrection to the lowest degree of telestial glory is still a condition of damnation that will be a source of torment to them forever.55
