[§241] Rev 14:8: The Second Angel Proclaims the Fall of Babylon
Revelation 14:8: And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
In Revelation 14:6-7, a first angel proclaimed that God will execute his judgments at the Second Coming only after the everlasting gospel is first preached as a voice of warning on earth and in the postmortal spirit world.1 In Revelation 14:8, a second angel proclaims (without a loud voice)2 that Babylon will fall twice because she fails to heed the warnings of the first angel.3 Babylon in this context refers to Modern Babylon, which is also known as the mother of harlots,4 the great and abominable church,5 and the Great Whore that sits on many waters.6 Modern Babylon is frequently called the antichrist.7
The word Babylon8 appears in the Book of Revelation for the first time in this verse,9 but the name applies to the Second Beast10 that John previously described in Revelation chapter 13.11 Most Bible versions omit the word city when describing modern-day Babylon the great.12 A number of scholars mistakenly equate the great city in this verse with the fall of Imperial Rome in 476 AD,13 or with the fall of the Holy Roman Empire during the Reformation.14 However, the great city (Modern Babylon), symbolizes the entire modern world of wickedness15 in the likeness of the ancient city of Babylon.16
The second angel declares that Babylon is fallen, is fallen. The repetition of the words makes the statement more emphatic and indicates that Babylon's fall is certain to occur.17 Modern Babylon will fall in the likeness of a drunken person who cannot stand due to his intoxicated state. Babylon falls because18 all nations are spiritually intoxicated.19 They are intoxicated by their worship of the image of the First Beast‒meaning the ideals and idols of ancient Rome. They worship through the modern institutions of the Second Beast.20
The second angel also declares that Babylon is fallen, is fallen because she will fall twice‒first spiritually and then physically.21 Babylon will fall spiritually when Satan begins to lose his wrongful dominion on earth as Christ begins to reclaim his rightful dominion on earth.22 This spiritual fall of Modern Babylon will occur when Christ is coronated King of kings during the future gathering of saints at Adam-ondi-Ahman.23 The second angel in Revelation 14:8 quietly announces Modern Babylon's spiritual fall because Adam-ondi-Ahman is a secret gathering of saints.24 Modern Babylon will fall physically 3½ years later at time of Christ's Second Coming. At that time, the wickedness of the telestial world will be suddenly and completely destroyed.25 John extensively describes Babylon's physical fall in Revelation chapters 16 to 19.26
In a dualistic vision, Isaiah prophesied in Isaiah 21:9 how history will repeat itself when Modern Babylon falls in the future as ancient Babylon fell in the past, saying: "Babylon is fallen, is fallen."27 The ancient city of Babylon was the greatest stronghold in the ancient world.28 Nevertheless, it fell to the Medes and Persians in a single night.29 This occurred as King Belshazzar and his wives, concubines, and thousands praised their false gods while drinking from the defiled temple vessels that Nebuchadnezzar stole from Jerusalem.30 Modern Babylon will fall physically in the same sudden manner at the Second Coming.31 This will occur as modern kings and thousands of people celebrate the death of the Two Witnesses in Jerusalem as described by John in Revelation 11:10.32
In Revelation 14:8, the wine of the wrath of her fornication33 alludes to an ancient practice where impure women gave intoxicating love potions to seduce the men they seduced.34 The wine of Modern Babylon's spiritual fornication35 is called a wine of wrath36 because it is an addictive and spiritually deadly poison.37 Spiritual fornication involves every type of evil, including the idolatry and false worship by the citizens of Modern Babylon.38 This intoxicating wine of fornication will bring the wrath of God upon all those seduced by Modern Babylon.39 God's wrath will be poured out upon the wicked citizens of Modern Babylon at full strength and without dilution.40 The drunken citizens of Babylon will drink from the cup of God's wrath to their utter destruction.41
Jeremiah used the same imagery to describe ancient Babylon when the Lord's golden cup of wrath chastened the wicked Jews during the Babylonian captivity.42 The tables then turned on ancient Babylon to her utter destruction. That pattern will repeat again at the Second Coming. That is, the Lord's golden cup of wrath that once chastened an errant Israel will turn on and destroy Modern Babylon.43
