[§236] Rev 14:2: The Heavens Rejoice Before the Second Coming

Revelation 14:2: And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps

When John saw the 144,000 Servants standing with Christ on heavenly mount Zion at the end of the Second Woe,1 he also heard a voice from heaven.2 The voice came from Jesus Christ.3 This is confirmed by the power and intensity of the voice, which John described as the voice of many waters4 and the voice of a great thunder.5 The same words can be found in Doctrine and Covenants Section 133:22-24,6 where the Savior's voice commands the continents to merge into a single land mass7 at his Second Coming.8

John also heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps.9 This symbolically expresses the joyous feelings of the 144,000 Servants that stand with Christ on heavenly mount Zion.10 The harp was the national instrument of the ancient Hebrews,11 and its sole purpose was to make joyful music that praised God,12 including temple worship.13 In this Second Coming context, the 144,000 Servants joyfully celebrate Christ's imminent victory over the Second Beast.14 The scenes of earthly horror that precede the Second Coming in Revelation chapter 13 are replaced by the joyful sounds of heavenly music at the Second Coming.15
