[§267] Rev 16:13: Three Unclean Spirits Like Frogs

Revelation 16:13: And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.

Christ's royal army of exalted kings of the east1 will reclaim the earth2 and cleanse it of all spirit sons of perdition3 by the time the seventh and final Vial Plague ends in Revelation 19.4 For this to occur, darkness will first descend on the seat of the beast during the fifth Vial Plague5 and the Euphrates River will symbolically dry up during the sixth Vial Plague to prepare the way6 for Spiritual Armageddon to begin in Revelation 16:13. In this verse John saw7 all the spirit sons of perdition on earth8 in the symbolic image of three unclean spirits like frogs.9

This is the first and only mention of frogs in the New Testament.10 The imagery comes from the second plague of Egypt found in Exodus chapter 8.11 In that historic plague, frogs literally afflicted both Israelites and Egyptians in every aspect of their lives.12 Ironically, the Egyptians believed that frogs had divine power,13 and were not to be killed.14 The Egyptian goddess Heqet had the head of a frog and the Egyptians believed that the breath of life and immortality came from her nostrils.15 Nevertheless, during the second plague of Egypt, the venerated frogs died and their decaying bodies were stacked in large piles that caused a horrible stench in the nostrils of all the people throughout Egypt.16

The frogs from the second plague of Egypt foreshadow the locusts from the First Woe in Revelation 9:1-11.17 During the future First Woe, the unembodied and disembodied spirit sons of perdition will be literally loosed from the bottomless pit in the likeness of a swarm of locusts.18 They will have great power to overrun the earth with spiritual darkness as a precursor to the physical battle of Armageddon.19 The evil spirits that will literally overrun the earth during the First Woe are the typological equivalent of the literal frogs that overran all of Egypt during the second Egyptian plague. The frogs of Egypt died and decayed, but the many evil spirits from the First Woe cannot die and will still be alive when they are removed from the earth as part of its millennial cleansing. The sixth Vial Plague is a major step in that process.

In Revelation 16:13, the many spirit sons of perdition who belong to this earth‒both unembodied and disembodied‒are divided into three groups represented by the three unclean spirits like frogs.20 The dragon, the beast and the false prophet stand at the head of each distinct group of evil spirits, respectively.21 During the sixth Vial Plague, the three groups of unclean spirits like frogs will come out of the metaphorical mouths (nostrils)22 of their respective head during the spiritual battle of Armageddon.23 This rather complex combination of symbols has one simple meaning: All three groups of unclean spirits like frogs‒who represent the spirit sons of perdition‒will lose their power and influence on earth during the sixth Vial Plague.

The foregoing conclusion is derived from the individual symbols and images that John saw in Revelation 16:13. For example, from the Egyptian typology, John saw that each frog represents the symbolic breath of life24 for the dragon, the beast and the false prophet, respectively. When the breath of life25 leaves the mouth of each spiritual head that head dies in the similitude of a physical body that dies when its inward spirit departs.26 When the head dies the body dies with it, and a dead physical body has no power of any kind on earth. From these symbols it follows that during the sixth Vial Plague the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet will become as dead bodies having no power on earth.27 Their final demise will come as all disembodied sons of perdition are cast alive into the lake of fire in Revelation 19:20, and all unembodied sons of perdition are bound in the bottomless pit in Revelation 20:1-3.28 This is the future outcome of the spiritual battle of Armageddon that begins during the sixth Vial Plague and ends during the seventh Vial Plague.29
