[§115] Rev 9:11: Satan Is King of the Locusts in the Bottomless Pit

Revelation 9:11: And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

The unembodied spirit sons of perdition in the bottomless pit have a king.1 He is Satan,2 the fallen angel that was cast down to earth at the time of the physical creation.3 The disembodied spirit of Cain is also a king in the bottomless pit over all disembodied spirit sons of perdition.4 Nevertheless, John identifies Satan as king of this entire domain of both unembodied and disembodied spirit sons of perdition because all such evil spirits ultimately belong to the single kingdom of the devil (Satan).5

Satan's name is Abaddon in Hebrew and Apollyon in Greek, which means destroyer in both languages.6 John listed Satan's name in both Hebrew7 and Greek8 so there would be no misunderstanding as to Satan's identity and purpose.9 The name signifies that his purpose and great labor is to destroy the souls of men.10 Abaddon and Apollyon metaphorically describe the spiritual destruction that will come the souls of mortal men during the First Woe as they align themselves with Satan and become mortal sons of perdition.11

Abaddon also means the place of destruction12 and region of the dead.13 This confirms that the bottomless pit is home to both unembodied spirits that fell with Satan at the creation, and home to disembodied spirits of the dead who become sons of perdition during their mortal lives.14 Satan will remain the king over both groups until the resurrection when those with resurrected bodies15 will have supremacy over Satan and all his unembodied hosts of hell.16 Since disembodied sons of perdition will not be resurrected until the end of the millennium,17 Satan will continue to be the king of destruction. He will rule in the bottomless pit18 during the First Woe that precedes the Second Coming and in the little season that follows the millennium.19
