[§117] An Overview of the Second Woe [Physical Armageddon]

John describes events of the Second Woe primarily in Revelation 9:13 through 11:14.1 These verses coincide with the seven-year battle of Armageddon,2 which begins in Revelation 9:13 when the sixth trumpet angel of the seventh seal sounds his trumpet.3 In Revelation 9:13-21, four angels of destruction use their evil influence to assemble actual armies for this epic battle that will include a symbolic number of 200 million people. A third part of the mortal combatants will be destroyed, including all mortal sons of perdition as a group.4

At the midpoint of Armageddon‒3½ years into the battle‒the great gathering of saints will occur at Adam-ondi-Ahman in Missouri,5 as foreseen by Daniel the prophet in Daniel 7:21-27.6 John symbolically describes this latter-day gathering of saints in Revelation 10:1-7, starting with the image of a mighty angel that delivers a little book to John.7 The little book includes a commission for John to prepare the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel to attend the gathering at Adam-ondi-Ahman and for their ultimate return from the north at the Second Coming.8

Prior to the mid-point of Armageddon, the gathered Jews will rebuild a Third Temple in Jerusalem where they will again offer Mosaic-type sacrifices.9 John describes this Third Temple in Revelation 11:1, which he symbolically measures with a golden reed given to him by an angel in his vision.10 The manner of John's measurements indicate that the Gentiles will besiege Jerusalem for the last 3½ years of Armageddon in the period known as the Great Tribulation.11 During this gentile siege, Two Witnesses will minister in Jerusalem and they will use the sealing power to protect the city and the Jewish people, as described in Revelation 11:3-6.12

The 3½ year ministry of the Two Witnesses will end when they are killed as martyrs to the cause of Christ. Their dead bodies will lie unburied in the streets of Jerusalem for 3½ days, as described in Revelation 11:7-10.13 After the Two Witnesses die, the Gentiles will commit horrible atrocities against the Jews in Jerusalem. A final Abomination of Desolation will occur as the Gentiles desecrate and destroy the Third Temple.14 These atrocities and the Second Woe will abruptly end when the Two Witnesses are suddenly resurrected and a great earthquake destroys much of Jerusalem, as described in Revelation 11:11-14.15 These events mark the end of the Second Woe.

After the great earthquake, John records that the third woe cometh quickly.16 The Third Woe coincides with seventh and final trumpet angel of the seventh seal.17 In Revelation 11:15-19, John provides a brief introduction to the Third Woe that includes Christ's Second Coming.18 However, the details of the Third Woe aren't given by John until Revelation chapter 15 and beyond.19
