[§71] Rev 7:2-3: The Two Parts of the “Seal of the Living God”

Revelation 7:2: And I saw another angel ... having the seal of the living God.

The seal of the living God is received by God's faithful servants1 to signify that they belong to God2 and are under his protection.3 The seal includes a promise of eternal life,4 which will allow God's servants to one day live as God lives.5 The seal has two distinct parts.6 The first part is the Abrahamic Covenant which husbands and wives enter when they receive the sealing ordinance in any of the many holy temples now on earth.7 The second part occurs when people have their calling and election made sure.8

People that receive the seal of the living God are assured of protection.9 This means they will not fail in their devotion to God10 and will not lose their guarantee of eternal life11 even when they encounter severe tribulations in the last days.12 The seal may protect such people from physical death,13 as the children of Israel were protected against the destroying angel by the blood of the paschal lamb on their doorposts during the first Passover.14 Similarly, Rahab and her family members were saved by the mark of a scarlet line tied about her window when Jericho fell.15 The seal of the living God does not always exempt God's servants from trials, including martyrdom.16 However, those that receive the seal of the living God are guaranteed spiritual protection during tribulation.17

The seal of the living God is not a literal mark placed on the body of those that receive the seal,18 just as the mark of the Second Beast in Revelation 13:16 is not a literal mark.19 However, husbands and wives must literally be sealed in the temple20 by those in authority21 or they do not receive the protections of the symbolic seal. People that have received the sealing ordinance wear the temple garment as an outward token or sign of the seal of the living God.22
