[§166] The Third Period of 1 Week of 7 Years [Armageddon]
The 2000-year gap of time in Daniel's Seventy Week's Prophecy1 will be followed by the third time period in Daniel 9:27,2 which is the 70th week of 7 years.3 This 70th week is the last seven years before the Second Coming.4 It coincides in time with John's Second Woe from Revelation 9:13-21, which is the seven-year battle of Armageddon.5
Daniel 9:27 states that during this 70th week of 7 years, Christ "shall confirm the covenant with many for one week."6 This refers to the Abrahamic covenant and making one's calling and election sure.7 John describes the same covenant in Revelation chapter 7. This chapter describes the 144,000 Servants that are to sealed in their foreheads8 with the seal of the Living God.9 Most of these sealings are to be accomplished during these last days of the sixth seal10 in the many LDS temples that now dot the earth and where temple sealings now occur in large numbers.11 Many people that make and keep the sealing covenant in their lifetime will have their calling and election made sure when they die.12 The promise in Daniel 9:27, however, applies specifically to those saints that are still alive during Armageddon‒the last seven years before the Second Coming.13 Christ will confirm the Abrahamic covenant with the many then living that have kept their temple covenants.14 This means their conditional promise of eternal life15 will be made sure.16 This confirmation of the covenant is a guarantee that these living covenant-keepers will not be spiritually overcome17 by the great trials and tribulations during the seven-year battle of Armageddon.18 People confirmed to eternal life may also be blessed with physical protection that will spare their lives during the battle of Armageddon during the 70th week.19
Daniel 9:27 also states that "in the midst of the week [Christ] shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease."20 Here, the midst of the week refers to the midpoint of Physical Armageddon after the first 3½ years of battle.21 The midpoint of Armageddon also corresponds in time with the gathering of saints at Adam-ondi-Ahman.22 This is the time, according to Daniel 12:1,23 when Michael the Archangel,24 who is Adam, the Ancient of Days,25 and "the great prince [that] standeth for the children of thy people."26 After Michael (Adam) attends the gathering at Adam-ondi-Ahman and stands for the Jewish people,27 the Great Tribulation will begin28 and will then continue for 3½ years until the Abomination of Desolation at the Second Coming.29 The prophecy that Michael will stand for the Jews after Adam-ondi-Ahman and during the Great Tribulation will be fulfilled by the protective ministry of the Two Witnesses in Jerusalem during that period of time.
The sacrifice and the oblation in Daniel 9:27 refers to Jewish sacrifices performed in the temple at Jerusalem as prescribed by the law of Moses.30 Historically, the Jews made sacrifices and oblations at Jerusalem until the Romans destroyed the Temple of Herod in 70 AD.31 The Jews continued their Mosaic sacrifices until then even though Christ's crucifixion in 34 AD32 fulfilled the law of Moses33 and ended animal sacrifices by the shedding of blood.34 Therefore, the sacrifice and the oblation of the Jews ended‒meaning the efficacy of those sacrifices‒when Christ made his atonement in the midst of a week35 of ten years‒that is 3½ decades‒between 1 and 70 AD.36 The literal end of sacrifice and the oblation that finally occurred in 70 AD is a foreshadow for the future end of sacrifice and the oblation in Daniel 9:27 that will occur during the 70th week of 7 years.
Before the future sacrifice and the oblation ceases in the midst of the 70th week of 7 years37 the sacrificial offerings and oblations must first begin again.38 This means the sons of Levi39 must again make temple sacrifices and oblations without priesthood authority40 as they did in the Temple of Herod temple before 70 AD.41 These future sacrifices must occur according to the ancient Israelite traditions, and they must occur before the sons of Levi have been purged of sin at the Second Coming.42 Once the sons of Levi are purified at the Second Coming,43 Doctrine and Covenants 13:1 states that they will "offer again an offering unto the Lord in righteousness."44
In a near-future day the Jews must build a Third Temple in Jerusalem, in whole or in part, so that the unpurified sons of Levi can make sacrifices and oblations before the Second Coming.45 Efforts to construct this controversial temple in Jerusalem could be the catalyst that triggers the start of Armageddon at the start of the 70th week of 7 years.46 When Armageddon begins, a massive army of Gentiles will fight against the Jews and Jerusalem for 3½ years.47 Then, at the midpoint of Armageddon,48 the Gentiles will use their military might49 to cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease in the Third Temple.50 This event mirrors the first Jewish war against Rome that began in 66 AD and ended with the final massacre of Jews at Masada seven years later in 73 AD.51 At the midpoint of the first Jewish war (3½ years) the Roman Legions caused the sacrifice and the oblation to cease when they destroyed Herod's temple in 70 AD.52 The Abomination of Desolation in 70 AD foreshadows the final Abomination of Desolation that will occur again at the Second Coming.53
Daniel 9:27 predicts that after the future sacrifices cease at the Third Temple in the midst of the week of Armageddon, there shall be an overspreading of abominations.54 This will occur during the second half55 of the 70th week of 7 years.56 This 3½-year period is called the Great Tribulation when gentile armies will cause the overspreading of abominations in and around Jerusalem.57 This will be the time when the Two Witnesses from Revelation chapter 11 use the sealing power to protect the Holy City.58 The Two Witnesses will ultimately die at the end of the 70th week and Jerusalem will no longer be protected against the invading gentile armies.59 The overspreading of abominations shall then desolate60 Jerusalem61 and the Third Temple will be destroyed as the Romans desolated and destroyed the Second Temple of Herod in 70 AD.62 The final desolation shall continue even until the consummation63 at the Second Coming.64
Abominations shall overspread Jerusalem while the dead bodies of the Two Witnesses lie unburied in the streets of Jerusalem for 3½ days.65 During this brief period, the Gentiles shall take half the city of Jerusalem and the Third Temple will be destroyed.66 Daniel 12:1 states that this future abomination upon the desolated Jews67 will be worse than the mirror-like desolations carried out by Antiochus Epiphanes in 168 BC68 and by Titus in 70 AD.69 Daniel 12:1 predicts that this final Abomination of Desolation for 3½ days before the Second Coming "shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time."70
The time of trouble in Daniel 9:27 is also the determined or set time71 when Christ shall reverse the tables of desolation and pour out desolations upon the Gentile desolators72 at the Second Coming.73 The Gentiles will be destroyed while the more righteous and surviving remnant of Jews will be blessed as they are converted to Christ when he appears to them on the mount of Olives.74
