[§97] Rev 8:2: Seven Angels in Heaven Are Given Seven Trumpets
Revelation 8:2: And I saw the seven angels which stood before God; and to them were given seven trumpets.
When Christ opened the seventh seal,1 John saw the seven angels which stood [stand] before God.2 Some scholars believe the seven angels in Revelation 8:2 are the seven spirits mentioned in Revelation 1:4.3 That cannot be correct because Joseph Smith identified the seven spirits as the mortal leaders or servants of the seven churches in Asia.4 The word servants is a generic term that can describe either mortals5 or angels in heaven.6 However, the ministry and symbolism of the servants from the seven churches during the fifth seal7 does not logically correspond to the ministry of the seven trumpet angels that pronounce judgments during the seventh seal.8
In Revelation 4:5, John also saw seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God.9 The seven lamps (spirits) in heaven from John's first vision of celestial paradise10 could possibly be the seven angels in heaven from Revelation 8:2.11 John's prior identification of these angels in Revelation 4:5 may explain why he used the definite article to identify them again as the (same) seven angels in Revelation 8:2.12 On the other hand, John may have used the definite article to identify the seven trumpet angels because his Jewish audience would recognize them13 from many types and foreshadows14 such as the seven named15 archangels16 that stand in the presence of God.17 They are seven in number to express perfection and completeness.18
Each of the seven archangels, if they are such, will be given a trumpet19 during the half hour of silence in heaven.20 Trumpets were used anciently as a call to war,21 for worship ceremonies,22 to recognize royalty,23 and to announce other important events.24 The seven trumpets in John's vision similarly announce25 the Lord's progressively worsening judgments26 that will bring an end to this telestial earth.27 The end will come as judgments are poured out on the wicked and as the righteous prepare for Christ's Second Coming as King of kings.28
