[§368] Rev 22:5: God’s Light Given to Those That Reign Forever

Revelation 22:5: And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.

Revelation 21:23 previously indicated that there shall be no night in the celestial kingdom because the Father provides light continually through his Son, Jesus Christ.1 The angel further explains in Revelation 22:52 the contrast between the light of celestial glory and the relative darkness of this fallen world, both physically and spiritually.3

The angel mentions a candle and light of the sun as two types of light that will not exist in the celestial kingdom.4 The candle represents artificial or manmade light of the earth,5 which is so far inferior to the divine light and glory of the Father that the two cannot coexist in the same space.6 This is akin to light and darkness that cannot coexist.7 Additionally, the celestial kingdom will not require any natural light of the sun because the entire resurrected earth will emit celestial light and glory.8 The very presence of the Lord God giveth ... light9 to all God's exalted children.10 The angelic voice implicitly identifies God's exalted children as the recipients of God's light because they that receive this light are those that shall reign for ever and ever.11

Before John's epilogue to the Book of Revelation begins in Revelation 22:6,12 his vision of the celestial kingdom concludes in Revelation 21:5 with a final emphatic statement that God's most faithful children will possess God's light;13 they will become as he is;14 they will do as he does.15 They shall reign forever and ever16 over unexalted angels in the celestial kingdom,17 and over those in all lesser kingdoms of glory.18 Exalted saints shall be kings and queens in the house of Israel forever.19 They will follow in God's footsteps and continue his creative activities20 from one generation of spirit offspring to the next.21 This is the final and strongest encouragement in the Book of Revelation for all saints22 to overcome even the most severe tribulations and trials in this life.23
