[§222] Rev 13:6: The Three Blasphemies of Satan

The Three Blasphemies of Satan Revelation 13:6: And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. : The Three Blasphemies of Satan Revelation 13:6 provides additional details about the blasphemies of Satan and the mouth of the First Beast during the Great Apostasy.1 In Revelation 13:5, Satan spoke three kinds of blasphemy through the mouths of his earthly agents2 within the Roman Empire.3 Many refer to the Roman Empire, or First Beast, as antichrist.4

The Three Blasphemies of Satan Earthly agents of the First Beast committed blasphemy against God and his name when they claimed to possess God's attributes and power.5 This blasphemy occurred when the Roman emperors6 and then the popes7 claimed to possess divine attributes and infallibility.8 In 1073 AD, for example, Pope Gregory (VII) published the Dictatus Papae, which declared the infallibility of the papacy9 and the supreme power of the popes over all earthly kingdoms.10 The Roman Catholic Church adopted this edict as an official doctrine of the church at the Vatican Council of 1870.11

The Three Blasphemies of Satan Agents of the First Beast also blasphemed God's tabernacle or tent.12 The tabernacle‒ and the temporary tent used by Israelites before the tabernacle‒represents the place where God meets his people.13 It is, therefore, a symbol of the ancient church that Christ organized on earth.14 The First Beast committed a blasphemy against Christ's ancient church in the time of Constantine when unconverted pagans entered the church in large numbers15 and their rituals replaced many of Christ's pure doctrines and practices early in the fourth century AD.16 The Christian church of Constantine was an apostate organization17 that blasphemously imitated Christ's true church in false and unholy ways.18 The blasphemies include the false doctrines of transubstantiation,19 the forgiveness of sins through the sale of indulgences,20 as foreseen by the prophet Moroni,21 and a host of other false doctrines.22 Martin Luther protested these blasphemous doctrines in 151723 when he nailed his ninety-five theses to the door of Wittenberg Castle Church in Germany.24 His attacks on the doctrinal abuses within the Catholic Church was a catalyst for the Protestant Reformation.25

The Three Blasphemies of Satan The third blasphemy of the First Beast was directed at them that dwell in heaven.26 This blasphemy began to occur when dead saints became the object of worship,27 rather than, or in addition to, the worship of God.28 Them that dwell in heaven includes righteous saints of Christ's true church that died as martyrs.29 They had many blasphemous wrongs committed against them in life and then they became the objects of blasphemy in death.30 Their righteous spirits dwell in heaven in the paradise of God awaiting the resurrection,31 but they are not to be worshiped and it is blasphemy to do so.32
