[§313] Rev 19:10: The Testimony of Jesus Is the Spirit of Prophecy

This podcast explains the content and meaning of John’s vision in Revelation 19:10, which states: “And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”  In this verse, John fell at the feet of an angel who had been explaining to John the events leading to the Second Coming during the seventh Vial Plague of the Third Woe. (Rev 17:1) When John fell down and prostrated himself at the feet of this angel as a form of worship, the angel rebuked John because this angel was not God the Father or Jesus Christ. The rebuke sends a strong message that angels, saints, and other idols must not be worshiped. The angel identified himself as a fellow servant of John, which means he was a disembodied spirit or a resurrected person who was in the service of Jesus Christ in mortality, as John was in the service of Jesus Christ during his mortal life.   The angel also instructed John what it means to have a testimony of Jesus Christ, saying it is the spirit of prophecy. This means that those who know that Jesus is the Christ possess that knowledge because they have received a revelation through the power of the Holy Ghost. This spirit of prophecy makes every person a prophet or prophetess.
