Mariners Mourn Their Loss (Rev 18:17-19)
The worldly markets of Modern Babylon will collapse in one hour, and the wealth of all nations will suddenly “come to nought.” (Rev 18:17) John symbolically categorizes the traffickers in Babylon’s goods as shipmasters, sailors, seamen and as many as trade by sea. When Babylon falls, these mariners of the sea will wail loudly as they cast dust on their heads to signify great humiliation and lamentation. (Rev 18:18-19) The mariners will grieve when they witness the loss of their livelihood and excessive profits from transporting the goods of Babylon.
The Heavenly Host Rejoices (Rev 18:20)
When Babylon falls physically and begins to burn, God the Father will command the angels in heaven to rejoice. They include the martyrs identified in Revelation 6:10-11 and the 144,000 Servants from Revelation 14:1, including the kings of the east from Revelation 16:12. God commands these “angels” to rejoice when they witness the fall of Babylon because “God hath avenged you on her.” (Rev 18:20)
The Violent Fall and End of Babylon (Rev 18:21-23)
John compares the destruction of Modern Babylon to a great millstone that a mighty angel (Jesus Christ) violently casts into the sea. The sea is a symbol of the bottomless pit (hell), from which Babylon can never rise again. Jeremiah witnessed this event and graphically described it, saying: “Her young men fall in the streets, and all her men of war shall be cut off in that day…. And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.” (Jer 50:30, 32)
Isaiah likewise witnessed and predicted the violent end of Babylon and her citizens, saying: “They shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.... And Babylon … shall be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.” (Isa 13:8, 19)
When Babylon falls and burns, six categories of nouns (persons, places and things) will be no more at all in Babylon. These six nouns shall stand as a silent witness of Babylon’s destruction and utter desolation. They include: (1) Babylon itself with all her citizens; (2) no music in four different categories, including harpers, musicians, pipers and trumpeters; (3) no craftsman, which means Babylon can never be rebuilt; (4) no sound of a millstone, which means there is no livelihood or even life from food produced by daily activity; (5) no light, either physically or spiritually; and (6) no marriages, symbolizing that Babylon shall never be repopulated.
Justification for Babylon’s Destruction (Rev 18:24)
The destruction and desolation of Modern Babylon was brought about by the merchants who “were the great men of the earth; for by their sorceries were all nations deceived. And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.” (Rev 18:24) The sorceries of the merchants include alluring and addictive advertisements on television, in social media and on the internet generally. We all stand as witnesses today of these sorceries that entice and enslave the citizens of Babylon and take them away from a covenant relationship with Jesus Christ and the goodness of Zion.
For all these reasons, Babylon shall be thrown down with violence, not gently dropped into the sea with only the force of gravity to pull it downward. For more on the witnesses of fallen Babylon—both vocal and silent—check out my podcasts from August 9 and 11, 2026.
