From Armageddon to Millennium

The final events of the Second Coming lead to the earth’s Sabbath known as the millennium‒a word that comes from the Latin words mille (meaning 1000) and annum (meaning years). Here follows a summary of John’s symbolic description of the final events of Second Coming in their chronological sequence:

Revelation 19:9: Christ’s first appearance of the Second Coming described symbolically as the marriage supper of the lamb that will occur at Zion (New Jerusalem) in Jackson County Missouri.

Revelation 19:11-16: Christ’s second appearance of the Second Coming that occurs when he steps foot on the Mount of Olives at Old Jerusalem and destroys all Gentile armies in that vicinity as one stage of Physical Armageddon.

Revelation 19:19-20: The first phase of Spiritual Armageddon behind the veil, when all disembodied sons of perdition are cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.

Revelation 19:21: Christ’s third appearance of the Second Coming in all the world when he destroys the remnant of all telestial-worthy people with the word of his mouth, thus bringing an end to Physical Armageddon.

Revelation 20:1-3: The second phase of Spiritual Armageddon, when the Dragon and all unembodied spirit sons of perdition are cast into the bottomless pit for 1000 years, which completes the spiritual cleansing of the earth in preparation for the millennium.

The Earth’s Final Spiritual Cleansing (Rev 20:1-3)

Michael the archangel (also known as Adam) is the angel that comes down from heaven to bind the Dragon in Revelation 20:1. Michael has consistently been at the forefront of all battles against the Dragon since the war in heaven. (Rev 12:7-9) Michael descends from heaven with the key to the bottomless pit (cf. Rev 9:1) and a great chain to bind the Dragon, “that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan.” The key and chain symbolize divine authority and power. Michael lays hold on Satan, casts him into the bottomless pit, shuts him up, and seals him inside. (Rev 20:2-3) These four forms of confinement (the world number 4) symbolically express the totality of Satan’s defeat. This last act of the Second Coming ushers in the earth’s millennial Sabbath when it shall rest after 6000 years of telestial wickedness. (Revelation 5:1, D&C 77:5-6, 12)

Millennial Highlights

When the earth is spiritually and physically cleansed at the Second Coming, it will be transfigured from its present telestial condition into a terrestrial and paradisiacal state. (D&C 63:20) Jesus Christ will reign as King of kings and Lord of lords. His millennial kingdom will be a perfect theocracy called the Church of the Firstborn. Christ will govern from two world capitals. His political and civil law will go forth from Zion, the New Jerusalem; while the ecclesiastical word of the Lord will come from a restored Old Jerusalem. Resurrected saints will share in Christ’s government as kings, queens, priests, and priestesses.

People living during the Millennium will know Christ personally and the knowledge of the Lord will fill the earth “as the waters cover the sea.” (Isa 11:3) This means people will know of the Lord, but they will also know everything he knows. The Lord will reveal hidden truths concerning the earth, its creation, its history, and its divine purpose. (2 Ne 30:18 [“Wherefore, all things which have been revealed unto the children of men shall at that day be revealed.”]; D&C 101:32-33 [“In that day when the Lord shall come, he shall reveal all things‒Things which have passed, and hidden things which no man knew, things of the earth, by which it was made.”]) For more on the transition from Armageddon to the Millennium, check out my podcasts from September 20 and 22, 2026.
